Sugar Land Town Square will host its annual Paradise on the Plaza event, a party featuring island-themed refreshments and entertainment, on Saturday, June 1. The event takes place from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Attendees are encouraged to wear tropical shirts, sundresses and flip flops to the party, featuring live music performed by Grupo Batacha, Houston’s premier Latin band. The Plaza will be decorated to match the island theme, featuring thatch huts, palm trees, and other tropical elements. A selection of food, beer, and wine will be available for purchase from Turquoise Grill.

Crowd of nearly 2,000 cheered on local youngsters at annual singing competition

Sugar Land Town Square recently hosted its 3^rd Annual Sugar Land Junior Superstar competition to spotlight local youth talent in Fort Bend County. Fifteen contestants competed in the American Idol-like competition, and the judges named nine-year-old Gabriela Sanchez the 2013 Sugar Land Junior Superstar.

Her first year in the competition, Sanchez impressed the audience and judges with her rendition of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.” Also earning top honors were second place winner Jacqueline Botz, who sang “Popular” from the Wicked soundtrack, and third place winner Cashmir Khawaja, who sang “Orange Colored Sky” by Natalie Cole.

The 2013 Sugar Land Junior Superstar Finale drew large crowds to Sugar Land Town Square. The third annual American Idol-like competition featured the talent of local youngsters between the ages of 9 and 13. The top three finalists won prize packages with gift certificates from participating Sugar Land Town Square retailers, and as the winner, Sanchez has the opportunity to perform live at an upcoming Sugar Land Town Square event.

The contestants were voted on by a panel of local, celebrity judges, including Christian Taylor of Universal-Republic Records; Tony Bracy of Capital Records; and Recording Artist Jude Gonzalves. Local radio personality Michele Fisher was emcee at the event, which started with a concert by 2012 Junior Superstar Selena Packard.

Auditions were held in March and 15 finalists were selected, ages 9 to 13, to perform during the live finale. Next up at Town Square is the 8^th Annual Sugar Land Superstar competition for Fort Bend County residents ages 14 and up. Round One of the competition will take place on June 8, Round Two on July 13, and Finale Night is on August 10.

Sugar Land Town Square hosts tryouts for eighth annual singing competition

Sugar Land’s American Idol-like competition,Sugar Land Superstar, is kicking off a new summer of local talent with open auditions on Wednesday, May 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Plaza of Sugar Land Town Square. The 2013 Sugar Land Superstar will win a prize package features items from Town Square retailers and the opportunity to perform live at future events.

All participants should be prepared to sing for 60 to 90 seconds without musical accompaniment. In addition, contestants must be over 14 years of age and residents of Fort Bend County to be eligible for competition.
