SUGAR LAND TOWN SQUARE NAMES 2012 SUGAR LAND JUNIOR SUPERSTAR

Sugar Land Town Square recently hosted its 2nd Annual Sugar Land Junior Superstar competition to spotlight local youth talent in Fort Bend County. Fifteen contestants competed in the American Idol-like competition, and the judges named eleven-year-old Selena Packard the 2012 Sugar Land Junior Superstar.

Her second year in the competition, Packard impressed the audience and judges with her rendition of Barbara Streisand’s “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” Also earning top honors were second place winner Cashmir Khawaja, who sang “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid soundtrack, and third place winner Johnathan Ross, who sang Kris Allen’s version of “Live Like We’re Dying.”

The top three finalists won prize packages with gift certificates from participating Sugar Land Town Square retailers, and as the winner, Packard has the opportunity to perform live at an upcoming Sugar Land Town Square event.

The contestants were voted on by a panel of local, celebrity judges, including Chad Strader, worship pastor at River Pointe Church and recording artist; Tony Bracy, record representative at Capital Records; and Sarah Golden, folk singer/songwriter and recent contestant on NBC’s The Voice. Local radio personality Michele Fisher was the evening’s emcee.

Auditions were held in March and 15 finalists were selected, ages 9 to 13, to perform during the live finale. Next up at Town Square is the 7th Annual Sugar Land Superstar competition for Fort Bend County residents ages 14 and up. Auditions for Sugar Land Superstar are on May 23 from 5-7 p.m. in the Plaza. Round One of the competition will take place on June 9, Round Two on July 7, and Finale Night is on August 11.

Local band Grupo KaChe will perform a mixture of traditional Latin sounds with modern rhythms that will make you want to dance the night away! Grupo KaChe has been named “Best Latin Band” by the Houston Chronicle and has performed in cities all across America.
